How to follow a runner live (and cheer them on)
Last updated October 3, 2026
Your friend is running a race and you want to know how it is going. Here is how to follow them live, where to stand if you go in person, and what to say when you cheer.
1. Ask for their live link
Ask your runner to share a live tracking link before the race. With HypeLap you open it on any phone, no app and no account, and see their rank, pace and progress update live.
2. If you are going in person
Check the course map and the expected pace, then pick two or three spots. Mid-race and late-race spots matter most, since that is when runners need a boost.
- Stand past the mile markers, where runners are tired and counting
- Avoid crowded start and finish areas if you want to be seen
- Use the live link to time your arrival to the runner's pace
- Bring a loud sign with the runner's name on it
3. Cheer in a way they can hear
Runners in earbuds cannot hear a crowd. In HypeLap you can send an air horn, a cowbell, a message or a 15-second voice note that plays right in their earbuds over their music. Voice notes work best when short and specific.
What to say
Use their name. Be specific. Keep it short.
- "You're looking strong, [name]. Just one more mile."
- "We're all watching. Keep going."
- "You trained for this. Go get it."
- "Three miles to go. See you at the finish."
4. At the finish
Check the live link to see when they are close, then meet them past the finish chute where it is less crowded. Bring water, a layer and a snack.
Questions
How do I track my friend running a marathon?
Ask them to share their HypeLap watch link, or check the organizer's tracking page if it offers one. HypeLap works at any race because it uses the runner's own phone or Apple Watch.

No. Open the link and tap. Cheers are free.
Can the runner mute me?
Yes. Runners can mute or block any fan, and our community guidelines ask everyone to keep cheers kind.
